  • Iraq war was 'right', says Brown

    Gordon Brown has told the Iraq inquiry the war had been "right" - and troops had all the equipment they needed. The PM also insisted he had not been kept in the dark by Tony Blair despite not being aware of some developments. His own intelligence briefings had convinced him that Iraq was a threat that "had to be dealt with", he said. But the main issue for him was that Iraq was in breach of UN resolutions - and that "rogue states" could not be allowed to flout international law.
  • Ukraine's Black Sea Fleet 'shift'

    The newly elected president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych has suggested he would allow Russia's Black Sea Fleet to remain in his country beyond 2017. Mr Yanukovych, during his first visit to Moscow since his election last month, said he would open a "new page" in relations with Russia. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said he hoped the "black streak" in ties between the two nations would be over. Tensions rose under Ukraine's previous Pro-Western administration. Mr Yanukovych's predecessor, Viktor Yushchenko, had wanted Ukraine to join Nato - a move strongly opposed by Moscow.
  • Pirates hijack Norwegian tanker

    Pirates have seized a tanker off Madagascar in the Indian Ocean and are sailing it towards the Somali coast, the ship's Norwegian owners have said. The UBT Ocean was carrying oil from the United Arab Emirates to Tanzania, Svenn Pedersen, of owners Brovigtank, told Reuters news agency. Piracy has made the seas off the Horn of Africa among the most dangerous in the world, despite naval patrols. Attacks usually increase between March and May when the seas are calmer. War-ravaged Somalia has had no functioning government since 1991.
  • Dozens hurt in Jerusalem clashes
    March 08, 2010 7:11 a.m. EST
    Palestinians and Israeli police have clashed near the Jerusalem compound housing the al-Aqsa mosque, leaving dozens of people injured. A large group of Palestinians left Friday prayers and began marching to the mosque, carrying banners and waving green flags, witnesses and police said. Police tried to disperse the crowd - some of whom were throwing stones - using stun grenades and tear gas. It is the latest in a series of clashes amid tensions over religious sites. Israeli newspaper Haaretz said 15 police officers and dozens of Palestinians had been hurt.
